If you have the Gospel Art Kit or the Primary Pictures, quickly look up pictures coinciding with the story. Always free helps and printables for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and anyone else who can use it.
If your family is smaller, do a talent night instead and let everyone present their own talent. Share an evening at home on the couch looking at old photograph albums. Tell your kids stories about your childhood and let them know who is in all those old photos! You may even want to print out a family tree chart and fill it in together so they can learn more about their ancestry.
DIY Night
Also ahead of time, assign family members for the prayers, lesson, activity, refreshments, etc. Those who play instruments can perform and small kids can join in on the drums with pots and pans. Or alternatively, you may all enjoy sharing a favorite song with the family and educating each other about new artists or music genres that you enjoy.
It can be anything fun, like a simple activity, a planned outing, a craft, or a great game. The activity doesn't need to correspond with the lesson, but if it does that would be great. Share the details of your family history and family traditions. After the lesson Family Home Evening is ended with a song followed by a closing prayer. Choosing a closing song that corresponds with the lesson is a great way to re-emphasis what is being taught. At the back of both the Church Hymnbook and Children's Songbook there is a topical index to help find a song that relates to your lesson's topic. • Invite friends and family of other faiths to join in worshipping Jesus, the Light of the World, and attend a special Christmas worship service on Sunday, December 22nd.
Encourage each member of the family to personalize them to reflect their individuality. This paper popsicle craft may be the perfect way to get started. Then you can string them all up together to enjoy your family project as home decor for a little bit. While you and your children look at the item, have someone read the short story. Forgotten to plan a lesson, or just have young children with very, very short attention spans.

Have a DIY night where you learn a new hobby or make something together as a family. Not only will you enjoy bonding time, you’ll have something to show for it. You don’t have to pack backpacks and hike off into the woods to enjoy some fun in the great outdoors. Pitch a tent in the backyard, play games, cook hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, make s’mores, and tell scary ghost stories under the stars. It is a really memorable and fun way to spend a family evening. Pick two family members to be the judges and let everyone else compete against each other to see who’s the best performer.

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe in setting aside at least one evening per week that is entirely dedicated to the family. Set up a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt then give everyone a set of clues. They have to find their treasures outside by flashlight and either bring the item back or take a picture of it. • The same Greek word used for “inn” when detailing Jesus’s birth in the book of Luke is also used in a passage about the location of the Last Supper. In that passage, “kataluma” refers to an upper room or guest room that Jesus and His disciples used. It’s possible that instead of searching for an inn or a hotel, Joseph may have sought out a private space in someone’s home in Bethlehem.
Youth and children should have opportunities of preparing and teaching a Family Home Evening lesson, although they may need some help. But it's definitely a great way for children to learn how to pray and what to pray for. You have permission to print as many copies as you need for personal and/or church use. Monday night is generally reserved for Family Home Evening; but other times can suffice, especially if they suit your family's needs better.
Our hope is this film will inspire and touch all of Christianity. It truly is a beautiful retelling of the birth of Christ, and we believe it’s a gift that can easily be shared with friends and families of other faiths. Another of my family home evening ideas is to try some family skits. Divide into two teams and each team writes a skit to present to the other team. If you’re family is big enough, let the kids write and present the skits while the parents judge.
